Educating children is the key to the prevention of heart disease and it is the focus of the Huesman Heart Foundation. In 2007, our educational programs were divided into four groups: - Books, Workbooks and Videos
Last year, 5119 copies of our Heart Health Books were delivered to 29 area schools. - Books with In-Class Presentation
Last year, Foundation President, Tony Huesman, and his buddy, "Teddy Tenderheart" presented their Heart Smart Programs to 820 students in eight elementary schools. - Healthy Heart Days
Last year, our Healthy Heart Day program was presented to 13 local elementary schools in eight school districts across the Miami Valley.
Healthy Heart Day is a full day of special programs, all dealing with Healthy Heart Lifestyles. Medical professionals volunteer their time to teach the kids about diet, exercise, and the dangers of tobacco. We also commission Cincinnati's Discover Health Van to come to each school for the day. This customized RV is a classroom on wheels that provides an interactive, computerized journey through the human body. Topics include the circulatory system, digestion, and the brain.
School cafeterias provide heart healthy lunches and our foundation provides heart healthy snacks such as fresh fruit and sugar-free popsicles. Each Healthy Heart Day concludes with an all-school assembly recapping the day's activities.
We would like to thank all of the health care professionals who volunteer time out of their busy schedules to come and speak to the students. We thank them all for their support! Any and all expenses for Healthy Heart Days are paid for by the Huesman Heart Foundation. - Live Like a Champion
This is a program where facilitators from Discover Health go into a specific grade, visiting the class once a month for five months, teaching them about heart health. Topics include nutrition, reading food labels, portion control, and exercise. Our hope is that the more often kids hear the message, the more likely they are to absorb the information. And, once again, this program is provided to schools at no charge! - "Just Move It"
The "Just Move It" program has been developed to assist P.E. teachers in structuring activities that stress physical movement and heart rate elevation. Recent statistics published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that childhood obesity has risen to a point that it can be considered a modern-day epidemic. Our primary goal is to raise students' awareness of the importance of maintaining a healthy heart through physical activity. The "Just Move It" Kits we provide P.E. teachers include the necessary equipment to help them accomplish this goal. Kits include items such as: (get list of items). Many thanks to Kettering Medical Center for their support.
